Monday morning tuna bite

September 22, 2008  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: fish reports, fishing reports

The BIG GAME 90 returned from an OKUMA charter yesterday morning and despite windy conditions they managed to put together a nice  catch of fish. Capt. MIKE JEWETT reported good water conditions offshore but when they took a look at the beach the windy weather and big swell had turned the water over in the shallows.
Mike said the rock fishing was very good at the west end of SAN MARTIN but they only hooked one yellow and one halibut at the island. The rest of the yellowtail ,tuna & dorado where caught offshore.

The BIG GAME 90 departed on a 3 day trip yesterday afternoon. Mike called in
this morning to let us know that they have been stopped for about an hour catching yellow fin. So far the bite has been a slow plunk with one or two fish hanging. They have managed to put 36 tuna on the boat so far.
This area of fish is about 100 miles south of San Diego and just perfect distance for a 1 1/2 or 2 day trip.

We have 1 1/2 day trips departing on Wednesday night fishing Thursday returning Friday morning and departing again Friday evening and fishing Saturday returning Sunday morning also ma 2 1/2 day departing Sunday evening.
The price for these trips is $260 or two can go for $400

Bad news for anglers and game fish in Mexico
3:59 PM, September 16, 2008
Outposts has learned that Mexico has amended its controversial shark-fishing regulation (NOM-029) to allow a 30% rate of incidental bycatch to commercial longliners holding shark permits.

What does this mean to anglers who enjoy traveling to destinations such as Cabo San Lucas and Baja California’s East Cape region?

An increasingly diminished fishery, over time, for glamor species such as dorado and marlin.

That’s right. This is unsettling news for everyone but the longliners who, with their miles of baited hooks, are now allowed to keep and sell species reserved for sportfishing under a separate law.

Sportfishing interests and conservation groups were aware of the push for such an amendment. But it was published into law, quietly, last Friday, catching opponents by surprise.

“This is disastrous. We have complete and utter disorder in our Mexican fisheries,” complained Minerva Saenz, who presides over the sportfishing association in Los Cabos.

The longliners had already gained inroads into coastal waters, with various restrictions, under NOM-029. Now they’ve been given a stamp of approval to target the more lucrative species.

(Only the naive believe the longliners are even after sharks, or that they’ll adhere to a 30% bycatch rate, which they’re being asked to monitor in their log books.)

And to think just last week there was positive news. Baja California Sur authorities seized two longline vessels in Magdalena Bay. On board were 10-12 tons of dorado, also known as mahi-mahi.

But this is a federal fisheries issue and CONAPESCA, Mexico’s fisheries agency, for no sensible reason, continues to side with the commercial fishing industry.

Said Mike McGettigan, founder of the Portland, Ore.-based conservation group SeaWatch: “It’s the most absurd legislation you’ve ever seen, but it flies in Mexico.”

From a conservation standpoint, it’s a step backward into a mountain of manure, to be sure, serving as proof that a powerful lobby, up against a loosely-organized opposition, can get what it wants if it tries long and hard enough.

The fight is not over. A major campaign to overturn NOM-029 is being mounted. But another battle has been lost by opponents of the regulation, and it’s clear who enjoys the upper hand. Outposts will publish developments as warranted.

Baja bust nets 10 - 12 tons of dorado

2:44 PM, September 12, 2008

Caption: Dorado, or mahi-mahi, are reserved for sport anglers in Mexican waters, yet they do not always elude the hooks of longliners supposedly fishing for sharks.

The Billfish Foundation issued a news release lauding the bust last weekend in Magdalena Bay of two Mexican longline fishing crews for illegally harvesting 10-12 tons of dorado while holding shark permits.

The only real news here: Mexico may actually be enforcing, to whatever degree, a law that fishermen holding shark permits—since there aren’t enough sharks left off Mexico to justify large-scale shark fishing—openly violate.

It is widely believed that the majority of these fishermen are after bycatch: the so-called incidental catch of more marketable species.

It is also reasonable to assume that illegally caught dorado—the species is reserved for sport angling in Mexican waters—has been ending up in U.S. markets and being sold as mahi-mahi, a more glamorous name for the same species of fish.

“Apparently the recent interest of U.S. enforcement officials in the import of illegally caught dorado has persuaded CONAPESCA that they need to concede TBF’s position that there is no basis in Mexican law to allow bycatch in the conservation zones and enforce the federal fisheries law,” said Ellen Peel, president of the The Billfish Foundation, a Florida-based conservation group.

CONAPESCA is Mexico’s fisheries agency, run by Ramon Corral, who has been an ardent supporter of a controversial shark fishing regulation that favors commercial fishing interests over sportfishing interests.

Peel said the two vessels—owned by renowned longliner Henry Collard—and their hauls remain confiscated at Port San Carlos within Magdalena Bay on the west coast of Baja California Sur.

Collard is an influential figure in the fishing industry. It’ll interesting to see how seriously Mexico treats this case.

Sashimi Special

September 12, 2008  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: san diego sportfishing

Captain Mike Jewett just called in on his way home from a 2 day trip – he hated having to drive away from a good tuna bite this morning to head up the line. But they worked their way home through some good water with lots of kelps, and were able to top off the trip with a nice mix of Yellowtail and Yellowfin Tuna today.

On top of all the YT and YFT action, Mike said he talked to some boats catching Bluefin a little farther to the west. Plenty of good fishing options for tomorrow, and good weather as a bonus.

Mike’s going to do a fast turnaround and get out tonight at 9pm on a 1½ day to target Yellowtail & mixed Tuna - a sashimi special. There might still be room for you – it’s a pretty light load tonight, so if you have a chance for a last minute getaway this could be one of those all-time trips.

Call 858-270-7525 now to see if you can get on the trip, and don’t forget to mention you’re a Reports From the Bridge subscriber to claim your fat discount.
