THE SHOW IS OVER AND WE HAD THE DRAWING.

March 29, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Fred Hall Show, thankyous

Good Monday morning

Well the last show for the spring 2010 season is over and it went out with a whimper.
It was nice to see many of my old fishing friends and I hope we made a few new ones too but over all this show was very slow! For what ever reasons from good weather diverting people outdoors to the economy or just lack of interest there was just fewer people at these 2 last shows.

The good news is those of you who did show up found some great deals at the show and got to look at some pretty nice new gear.

As promised after the show on Sunday we had the drawing for those of you who bought OKUMA rods and reels at the Fred Hall shows this year. The winners are the 6 day went to Mike Cagle of San Diego,The 3.5 day went to Clay Van Thistle of L A and the lucky winner of the 2 day was Kyle Ordile of Vista.

Congratulations we have sent out emails and will be calling you. See you on the BIG GAME using your new OKUMA rods and reels. For the rest of you who bought OKUMA gear and received a 50% off an BIG GAME trip please call A S A P  to book your trip as many trips are now filling and you should book now to get your first choice on a trip.

Anyone who hasn’t had a chance to see OKUMA”S new reels and are in the market for a great reel you need to take a good look at what they have to offer.

P. S

THE GUYS HAD A NICE 2 DAY TRIP BUT NO EXHOTICS.  THEY HAD GOOD ROCK FISHING AT SANTA BARBARA ISLAND ON SATURDAY THEN  SOME BASS, BONITO AND WHITE FISH AND MORE ROCKFISH  AT SAN CLEMENTE ON SUNDAY. THEY DID SEE SOME YELLOWS BUT NO BITERS.

I’m Stuck at the Show - But You’re Not!

March 26, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Fred Hall Show

Hello all !!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to just touch base before leaving for the Del Mar show this morning.

I was talking to several of the reps. at the show last evening and discussing how slow the show was yesterday. I t seems that many of the folks that would normally be at the show where out playing/fishing and enjoying this great weather we are having in March.

We did talk to several guys that had come in early from a trip to the Coronados or La Jolla looking & finding in some cases yellows and even some seabass.

The seabass guys are keeping it quiet where but I have my hunch where to look .

Some of our friends that fish catalina in small boats have scored on the seabass too.

Hell if Mike & Jake didn’t have a 2 day departing this evening I would have been on the water today myself.

Well at any rate if I must be at the show I would like to ask some more of you to come by and see me at the booth. We can swap some old sea stories and you can take a look at OKUMA’s new reels.

Tony Panio of A A lures has some great deals on his famous swim baits and tails. He’s just arround the corner from us at Mike Gardener’s booth. There is a lot of neet stuff to see and buy so come on down and keep me company.

tight lines and good times

THREE ISLANDS IN 4 DAYS NOW THAT’S FISHING FROM LONG BEACH

March 22, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: fish reports

We where out 4 days and looked at 3 islands.

We spent our 2 day trip at S C I the first day we looked at the front side of the the Island and found good conditions and fun fishing. There was a little sign of yellowtail down east but we didn’t put any on the boat. We spent the night in the cove looking for squid. There is a little sign of bait squid there but we only managed to catch a few pieces on catchers.

On day 2 we worked our way up the back side. We found cooled water and the bass fishing was slow and no exotics.

On Friday night we made the run to Santa Barbara Island. The water was 59′ but clean .

the bass bit a little and we had very good fishing for big whitefish sheep head and assorted rockfish all in very shallow water. Late in the day we where chasseing some Bonito and managed to put a very nice yellow on board.

On Sunday we went to the Emerald Isle. The day before one of our code boats had made the year’s first good catch of seabass and everyone was excited to go give it a try. WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK STEVE FROM THE MOODY MARLIN FOR ALL OF THE GOODIES HE GAVE TO THE LUCKY FOLKES ON THIS TRIP.

As so often happens we should have been there yesterday. We did manage one seabass but no more and the bass fishing was slow. We did see some small schools of sea bass in several ares so we expect that the fishing should pick up as this full moon arrives next week.

The boat will be at the dock during the week. The boys will be at the Del Mar show Wed.& Thurs. Then they will be back out on a 2 day open party trip over the weekend.
This trip is very light and we have reduced the price to just $199 for the 2 days.

THAT’S CORRECT THE WEEK DAY PRICE OVER A WEEKEND $199

SEE YOU ON THIS ONE

Sport Anglers Alarmed by Proposed Obama Policy

March 18, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Irv's soap box, MLPA

A controversy has erupted in the sport fishing community over a new federal management plan for oceans and Great Lakes waters. Recent opinion pieces circulating on the internet and reported on numerous radio stations have stoked the flames through revelations that the policy, if implemented, would prohibit recreational fishing within vast areas of public water.

It has also been reported that many organizations with a history of being against fishing access played large roles in its formation and that the plan could be finalized by the end of March with President Obama able to implement it through Executive Order.

Despite the firestorm, it should be pointed out that the plan is not currently finalized and, according to a Department of the Interior fact sheet, the Administration denies any intent to restrict fishing access.  However, there remain causes for concern.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) reported on the draft plan in October, 2009.  At the time a combination of factors raised concern with the USSA and other pro-fishing organizations that plan could result in restrictions on sport anglers.

First, there was a lack of any reference in the report to the positive impact recreational anglers have on aquatic conservation.  In turn, this raised an alarm as to what the framework for zoning in these waters will be when the final report is issued.

Other factors included a history of anti-fishing interests that have been pushing the creation of “Marine Protected Areas” where angling would be prevented.  Several of these areas already exist off theCalifornia and Florida coasts.

Additionally, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce that guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, has also imposed restrictions on sport anglers in Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic.  Finally, there is a general concern related to some of the key anti-hunting regulatory appointees made by the Obama Administration such as Cass Sunstein.

When looked at comprehensively, these factors made it necessary that the USSA and other groups ensure that the voice of recreational anglers be heard by the Administration during the formation of its policy.  According to several leading recreational fishing groups, this has not happened and those groups have urged supporters to make their concerns known to their members of Congress.

For example, the American Sportfishing Association has stated  “It is important that the administration recognizes and promotes the economic and conservation contributions of outdoor recreation, including recreational fishing and boating.”

Jim Donofrio, the Executive Director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) said in a recent press release that “I don’t think this president would consider banning recreational fishing outright, but it’s clear to us that the Obama Administration would like to severely restrict recreational fishing.”

Additionally, the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus leadership, with the support of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, has also sent a letter to President Obama stating that recreational fishing deserves “full consideration and incorporation” in the proposed plan.

The USSA joins these pro-fishing organizations, legislators and others in urging sportsmen to contact their U.S. Representatives and Senators about this proposed policy. It is essential that the Obama Administration appreciates the importance of recreational fishing to conservation and local economies.

“Recreational anglers provide the bulk of the funding for fisheries and aquatic conservation,” said Bud Pidgeon, USSA president and CEO.  “Their voice should be heard before any policy is enacted limiting access and causing a decline in resources for conservation, not to mention job losses in areas supported by fishing.”

Take Action! Sportsmen are urged to contact their U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators and urge them to include recreational fishing protections in any federal management plan for the oceans and Great Lakes.
