Different Day Different Fish

August 31, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Sportfishing

Day 2 of the 2 1/2 day was quite different than day1. In yesterdays hot spot there was much more bait  up on the surface and the tuna just didn’t want to bite. After several hours of trolling and stopping on small spots of breaking fish that would not bite Mike decided to go looking. Late in the after noon they found a kelp that had some yellows on that wanted to bite and they salvaged 27 fish.

The boat will be at the dock in the morning and will be back out on a 6 day in the afternoon.

I will be out of town on my annual dove opener hunting trip and will return on Sunday. Wahoo Willey will be doing the posts while I’m off killing birds.

Wish me luck and see you on Sunday

A Nice Day On the Bluefin

August 30, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Sportfishing

Capt. Mike called in after dark to let us know that they ended up with 48 bluefin and 3 albacore for the first day of this weeks 2 1/2 day trip.

Mike said that they lost almost as many as they landed due to all kinds of mishaps and poor tackle and these damed fish are just tough!!

Lets hope they are under the boat in the morning

San Martin showing signs of life again

August 24, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Sportfishing

After 5 days of no yellows at the island the guys got on a late bite on the 15 fat. spot and managed to land 39 fish.
Mike said that the conditions straightened out arround 4 pm and with the good current and warmer water the yellows came up and bit pretty well. The *)^&^*$^#%seals got as many as we landed. There seems to be a fair amount of yellows there and the bottom fishing was quite good too.

We will be back at it on Friday night for 2 days and we still have some space on this one. Remember you can bring a buddy for 1/2 price + food and permits on this trip

                              Trip # 52 Aug.15 to 18

Here are some pics of the fish that started it all.
Captain Mike pulled up to San Martin and parked for the night. Night Captain Dave had jigged up a few live squid for us and we had been catching some bottom fish on dropper loops for something to do before the sun came up. Jared Naab had just caught and released a small sculpin. He decided the dead squid still looked good and dropped it back down, pulled up his lawn chair and set his pole back between the rails. SMACK! Jared’s rod slammed the lower rail. Jared slammed it under the upper rail! Ha! He missed the strike.
“Maybe he’ll come back around.”
This time when that beast charged the squid Naval Officer Jared Naab was ready and it was GAME ON! After a hard fought battle, the 1st yellow of the day and probably the fleet, was on the deck of The Big Game 90!

A lost friend

August 24, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Sportfishing

I just received some very sad news today.

Long time friend and mentor Hugo Miller passed away to day at his home in Indiana.

I first met Hugo when I bought my first boat in 1975 I was told that he was the guy to go to  keep my old boat running.

He worked as a truck mechanic by day and moonlighted in the evenings down on the sport fishing docks.

He was a wizard at keeping our old Jimmys running.

In later years he worked for Hawthorne Machinery by day and still kept many of our boats running by night.

I could tell many stories about Hugo, but what he will always be rememberd for most is his easy going midwestern drawl and his willingness to get the job done, even if it took all night.

Hugo I will miss you, and God willing I’ll see you on the other side.
