A 2 1/2 day Doc ski trip and then it’s off to Long Beach

February 15, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: fish reports, long beach fish reports

Capt Mike and the BIG GAME crew returned this morning from a 2 1/2 day charter that fished down the Mexican coast.

Mike said that the weather was fantastic and the fishing was good also.

After stopping short and catching some giant squid Mike said  they had a nice surprise when they arrived at the high spot off collnett. Some of  the other boats where catching  yellowtail so Mike got the group rigged up with heavy yo-yo jigs and they managed to put 9 nice fish on the boat before the fish sunk out . After the yellows stopped showing they went looking for reds down cost  closer to San Martin. although Mike and the crew  put in a long hard day they didn’t produce much .It seems that when the giant squid  move in  the rockfish  move off the spots.  On the 2nd morning they where back at collnett trying to sample some more yellows but as so often happens the dammed fish didn’t show that morning. Mike spent the remainder of the day drifting the different high spots at collnett and managed to fill everyone’s bags with nice quality whitefish , reds and 4 ling cod.

The final count was 200+whitefish 112 reds and assorted rockfish, 4 lings, 9 yellows and 93 giant squid

This was our last trip from San Diego until we return in the last week of June to start our summer trips.

We will be running our first trip departing from Long Beach Marina on March 17th a 2 day 976tuna charter.  To book a spot on this trip call Richie @ 310 328-8862.

MIKE’S MONDAY REPORT

November 23, 2009  //  Posted by: Mike  //  Category: Sportfishing, long beach fish reports

We had a bumpy ride out Friday night but made it to San Nick just after daylight on Saturday morning and put the anchor down on the 11 fathom spot.

We had a hardy group and most everyone was at the rail even thou there was about 20kts. of wind and a building sea. After an hour of just scratch bites and with the seas and wind coming up even more we made a move to the dutch harbor side of the island.

The sea conditions where much better even thou we still had about 20kts. of wind. It looked like we where going to just have to wait the wind out but we got a nice surprise and found a couple of shallow rocks that produced for us.

We where able to put together a nice catch of large white fish ,chuckle heads, lings and sheep head. It was cold out on deck but most of the gang held in there and made a catch of good eating fish for the freezer.

We got a report of a 6pack boat catching yellows at the west end of San Clemente so after every one had eaten we headed over to north west harbor.

During the night the wind backed off and at day light there was only a ripple on the water. We hooked a couple of large mystery fish in the anchorage but they found the kelp and broke off. We made a move out to the 9 fathom spot and found the yellows holding on the west edge. We managed to land 7 fish before the current backed off. With little current and some of the folks wanting to catch some more rockfish we moved out to deeper water and put some more rockfish in everyone’s bag.

After lunch we went looking for the yellows again and they where up on the surface this time along with the big bonito. We saw a lot more fish in the afternoon and managed to put 20 nice yellows and all of the bonito you wanted on the boat.

All in all it was a fun trip and as usual Doc was the hot stick with 4 yellows and he handed a few more off.

THANKS DOC AND COMPANY WE ALL HAD A GREAT TIME

SOUTH COAST FIRST PERSON REPORT

LONG BEACH – My name is Madison Rodriguez, and I’m 11 years old.  My dad took my sister Abby and me on our first overnight fishing trip this weekend may 17 aboard the Big Game 90 and
I wanted to share my amazing trip with you.

We started the day at San Clemente Island making squid to hopefully catch a white seabass. When the sun came up we were at
the island near some kelp. Abby hooked a big fish that turned out to be a bat ray. It felt smooth and we let it go back.  Then everyone else got hooked up at the same
time, which turned out to be big yellowtail. Five were landed up to 35 pounds, and all of them were hooked on squid.

Later, we went to some deeper water 180 feet and fished with
some sardines.  I used a dropper loop rig and hooked  a 10-pound lingcod with a huge mouth. What a beautiful fish!  Abby hooked up on two 6-pound salmon grouper at one time. They have big eyes!  As I took a break, a man hooked up on something really big.  This fish took him (and the crew)  around the boat 12 times in one hour, and when it finally came up it was a 12-foot thresher shark, if you include the tail.

The crew seemed to be very proud of this catch, and it took four guys to get
the shark over the rail.  The captain measured the shark and it taped out to weigh 233 pounds.  Everyone took home some thresher steaks. Well, nobody caught a white seabass, but I still had an amazing trip, and I think I’m ready to try a tuna trip this summer.  Dad says that fishing is not always this good, but  we’ll see.
Thank you for making such a cool newspaper.

MADISON, 11, says she’s ready for a tuna trip after her overnighter on the Big Game 90 to San Clemente Island.
