IT BACK TO WORK BUT ON A SAD NOTE

Hello all!!!!!!

Well we are back from our much needed time off.

Mike and the boys had a great time in Mexico and I had good hunting in Nebraska but as always good things come to an end.

Mike has already started some projects on the boat and I am booking trips for the upcoming season.

Our first trip of the year is a 2 1/2 day Colonet trip that departs on January 16, 2009.             If you book this trip and mention you saw it advertised hear on REPORTS FROM THE BRIDGE you can go for 50% off the regular price. There are a limited amount of spots at this price so call Larry now to save.

On a sad note long time friend and mentor Dick Helgern passed away this weekend.

My father knew Dick and fished with him as far back as the late 1950s when Dick was running the Catalina Special for Norm Hagen. I caught my first yellow tail on the Reel Special when Dick was running it a few years later. I worked for Dick off and on during the 1960s on the Electra while I was still in school. In the early 1970s when I bought my first boat (the Sundown) Dick counseled and helped me tough those first tough years as a young boat owner. When I started to build a new Sundown in 1979  I used many of his ideas on the new boat.

Dick was one of the best sportfishing operators I have ever known. It wasn’t just his fish sense  (witch was equaled by very few) but it was his business sense and his ability to make every passenger feel special and appreciated.

Richard you may be gone but you will never be forgotten.

tight lines and good times

HEADED TO THE LUPE

Good morning all

The BIG GAME 90 departed yesterday afternoon on a DAVE WILSON CHARTER . The gang was all fired up to take a crack at the LUPE ( Guadalupe Island) so they will be traveling down all night and will arrive sometime after noon today.

For thoes of you that have never been to Guadalupe. The Island lays 220 miles south of San Diego. The first thing you need to remember is when you travel due south from San Diego this will take you offshore. The closest point of the Baja main land is over 150 miles to the east north east.

The island is famous for it’s home guard Yellowtail it’s not uncommon to hook 50lb class fish ,landing them is another story.  There is also  resident schools of yellow fin tuna that can reach 150lbs. plus althoe most yellow fin caught at the island are less than 100lbs. They can be a real test of your tackle and your stamina. The huge blue fin that made the Lupe so famous in the early days of Long Range fishing have been mostly absent in resent years but once in a while you might get one to put in an appearance.       These guys can go over 300lbs. The island offers many  rare sights including some close encounters with 20ft.+ Great white sharks. The regular passengers have come to call them the tax collectors. Personally I call them *^($%#@#&$a@ when one of them takes a 50lb. bite out of a 100lb. fish but they are impressive. The Island has much more to offer and is truly the first stop for real long style fishing.

In the coming days MIKE will be  calling in progress reports STAY TUNED.

The fall of the year is the time to take one of these trips and we have openings on trips from                       1 1/2 day offshore trips to 6 1/2 day trips to the Lupe. CALL THE OFFICE @ 858 2707525

STEADY PATTY FISHING

August 27, 2008  //  Posted by: Mike  //  Category: big game 90, fish reports, fishing reports, san diego boat fishing, san diego charter, san diego charter boats, san diego charter fishing, san diego fishing

After looking at the high spot for very little we headed offshore in search of the mother load. We found a line of kelps holding good amounts of yellows and dorado. We kept at it all afternoon and are now head home and will arrive at the dock around 6am. We put over 300 mixed fish in the hold for this trip and released more than that. It’s really nice to see guys keeping only what they need and putting back the rest for the future. We depart at 2pm on Wednesday for 6 days wish us luck

I looks like the years best fishing is yet to come don’t miss out on all of the fun. There are openings on our September and October trips. Come fish with the BIG GAME CREW.

Mike Hear;

We spent the day looking for kelp down the coast. Most of the pattys we found had small yellows and dorado on them and a few nice tuna. We found one nice patty that was holding a good grade of fish.         The Yellows where 15 to 18 lbs and the Dorado where mostly 12 to 15 lbs. The boys put 97 mixed fish in the fish hold and we must have released at least twice that many during the day.

We spent the night at Camalu and caught 30 scoops of bait size squid. We will try them at the Collnett high spot this morning.

Thats all for now

MIKE

P.S.

We have several openings on  our September trips call the office @ 858 270-7525 and tell them              MIKE said to ask for the 2 for 1 discount
