Reports From the Bridge

Hello all!!!!!!

Well we are back from our much needed time off.

Mike and the boys had a great time in Mexico and I had good hunting in Nebraska but as always good things come to an end.

Mike has already started some projects on the boat and I am booking trips for the upcoming season.

On a sad note long time friend and mentor Dick Helgern passed away this weekend.

My father knew Dick and fished with him as far back as the late 1950s when Dick was running the Catalina Special for Norm Hagen. I caught my first yellow tail on the Reel Special when Dick was running it a few years later. I worked for Dick off and on during the 1960s on the Electra while I was still in school. In the early 1970s when I bought my first boat (the Sundown) Dick counseled and helped me tough those first tough years as a young boat owner. When I started to build a new Sundown in 1979  I used many of his ideas on the new boat.

Dick was one of the best sportfishing operators I have ever known. It wasn’t just his fish sense  (witch was equaled by very few) but it was his business sense and his ability to make every passenger feel special and appreciated.

Richard you may be gone but you will never be forgotten.

Good Sunday morning:

All is well aboard the BIG GAME. It has been a full week.

We started a 5 1/2 last Sunday afternoon. We decided to take a look at the tuna area off of San Martin  for the first day of the trip and found not only yellowfin tuna but 17 nice fat albacore and some yellowtail and 2 bluefin.

Tuesday morning found us on the beach about 200 miles south of San Diego catching some quality yellows. After the current slacked off we went looking along the kelp line for whatever we could catch and spent the day catching every thing you could imation. yellows, reds, lings cuda, bonito, MORE yellows,even a couple of small blacks that where released. 

That night we made the move to Guadalupe. The move was a good one.

We had 97 yellowfin on Wednesday and 25 on Thursday along with a marlin.

We are now on our 2nd day of a 2 day trip that departed Friday evening and despite very tough conditions we managed to capture 87 mixed fish yesterday even 2 albacore.

We will be departing Monday after noon on a 6 1/2 day.

WITH GOOD WEATHER THE NEXT 2 WEEKS MORE AND MORE ALBACORE WILL BE CAUGHT.

We have a 2 1/2 day trip departing Thursday night the 23rd. and we will be in search of the allusive albi.

AFTER A GREAT DAY FISHING THE COAST WE DECIDED TO MAKE THE RUN TO THE LUPE IN SHEARCH OF SOME TROPHY TUNAS AND YELLOWS WE WILL ARRIVE ARROUND 10 THIS MORNING.THE REPORTS FROM THE OTHER BOATS HAVE US IN HIGH HOPES

CAPT. MIKE JEWETT JUST CALLED IN TO REPORT THAT THEY ARE OFF TO A NICE START WITH OVER 75 YELLOWS AND A FEW TUNA OFF OF THEIR FIRST KELP OF THE DAY. MIKE SAID THEY ARE FISHING AT ABOUT 160 MILES SOUTH OF SAN DIEGO ON THEIR 2ND DAY OF THE TRIP AND WILL BE ABLE TO STAY UNTIL DARK IN THIS AREA THEN HEAD BACK UP NORTH FOR THE LAST DAY OF THE TRIP.

THE OKUMA GUYS HAVE BEEN KEEPING THE PASSENGERS BUSY TRYING OUT ALL OF THE NEW TACKLE THEY ARE SHOWCASING ON THE TRIP .

Just called in to report wide open fishing on quality size yellows.
Mike said that after looking at the terfin charts he and 2 other boats decided to take a flyer down the coast. They found a line of patties that are loaded with yellows & tuna. They have landed some tuna bluefin and yellowfin. All three boats have over 175 yellows each and they still have several hours to find more tuna.
This area is about 110 miles south of San Diego and is just perfect distance for a 1 1/2 or 2 day trip.
The BIG GAME 90 has some openings on a 2 day departing Wednesday night @ 9pm
