2 1/2 Day Troll Fest

Jul 14, 2010  //  Posted by: Irv  //  Category: Sportfishing

You can’t say we didn’t try but we found very little that wanted to bite.

From the Dumping Grounds to the Worm to the Cortez over the Butterfly and finish up in the squid grounds at La Jolla. for just 13 albacore and 1 yellow tail and some rockfish.
A brite spot on this trip was that Lucas Ogg  caught his first Albacore and as tradition goes he eat it for lunch good going Lucas

I was on the trip, not sure if we ever made it into Mexican waters, but we did pay for the mexican fishing licenses. Also not sure why we were only 4.5 hours from La Jolla when we were supposed to be albacore fishing 100 miles or so from San Diego. Fishing is fishing and sometimes it is bad, but not sure if we had the best effort here.

I thought I would answer you my self

As your email address suggests you might not be very experienced with San Diego off shore Albacore trips

As to you questing us taking Mexican permits On most all trips we take the Mexican permits because if we are even 1 mile inside Mexican waters on any part of the trip we must have permits for the entire trip.(It’s their country and we must play by their rules)

You may not be aware of this but The U S Cost Guard is capable of tracking all Solas equipped Vessels and they share this info with the Mexican Government so cheating is not an option.

On your trip the boat was in Mexican waters the entire first day and part of the second day.

The area that Mike looked at the second afternoon ( the butterfly bank) is historically an area that 1,000s of albacore are caught each year and it was his best guess that because of the good water conditions that he saw from satellite imagery that (we pay for not the BS stuff online) it needed to be looked at. the closest point being 42 miles from Pt. Loma.

As an add effort Mike made an unschuled stop at La Jolla where there has been an off and on bite on white seabass some of them being as large as 60+ lbs.I”m sure you just might have taken one of them home as a consolation prize. He bought $100 worth of squid and got in 4 hours late.
Michael the bottom line is that there was only 13 albacore and 1 yellowtail taken on your trip and you and all 37 other passengers and the 7 crew members where expecting much more. It was not from lack of effort. We can only try our best and hope for some luck too boot. If trolling over 30 hours and getting 4 hours late isn’t enough for you I don’t know is.

That’s why it’s called fishing Not catching

I will be taking a trip aug 15th and later in sept. I hope the yellow fin show up cuase if you look at all the fish counts for all boats not much is happing this season i went on trip 25 and we are lucky with what we got in tuna and the yellowtail bite was great this might have been the best trip for the season looking at all the fish counts so far.

I have fished with Mike quite a few times on the Tuna grounds and we have had the luck on our side and always had outstanding trips. To say that mike and the crew don’t give an all out effort is unfair. I don’t know if you’ve been watching the reports all around but the Albies and Bluefin are biting out of range for anything under 4 days stuff really and even that has been spotty at best. The results you experienced on your trip are very typical for the rest of the fleets and better than some. I know it was a tuff frustrating trip, we have all had them and I am about to embark on one too it looks like tomorrow, but cheap shots at a great Captain like mike are unfounded.
