A comment from a self styled expert. What do you think?

I would like everyone to know we take your comments (Good and Bad) very seriously. We listen the criticism and try to improve our operation.

Some times we get a comment like the one I am posting.  I would invite your comments. Please note this was from the guy that posted the comment that he wanted to fish for  only tuna and going 300+ miles for yellowtail was a waste of time.

WOW, where do i start,Mike the captain, needs glasses, he couldn’t find a Tuna in a 5gal bucket and if he does stumble on one, his crew will make sure nobody catches it. I was on this trip, it was the worst, and thieves to boot.
First the troll was at high speed,it would take a flying tuna to catch the tiny lures. Second the crew is telling everyone not to use weights,(how are you going to catch the tuna 60 ft down if no weight),Third the crew was no help at keeping the people out of the corners.Fourth the crewman with the mohawk hair is taking the belly meat of the peoples fish and giving it to whoever they want. Fifth they steal your fish, a regular size fish fills about two bags almost three. One of my fishing partners caught a fish and recieved half a fish, he paid for a whole fish, and a bag?(what bag)$2.00 for that bag. It’s impossible for that fish to fit in one bag.
And laying a chum line one fish at a time, doesn’t seem like it’s going to bring any fish to the boat.
Well Irv, you said maybe i shouldn’t go, well you were right and I don’t recomend this boat to anyone. They will rob and steal from you.And your fish storage doesn’t even freeze the fish, it was warm after being there 24 hours, and lets not talk about the bathrooms.
!!!!!!!DON’T GO ON THIS TUG !!!!!CAUTION!!!!!!!!!

This is our answer it was written by Larry Edwards and approved by me.

Well, James, you certainly missed your profession. Someone with the wide spectrum of knowledge you profess should have been able to afford a charter yacht for your fishing. Lets see, you start as being an optometrist, knowing sure well that Captain Mike needs glasses. Your 2nd guessing is certainly 2nd to none, so apparently you believe you are Captain’s material and have the ability to do a better job. I just love your insinuation of high speed trolling aboard the boat. You probably got a nose-bleed from the super-sonic speed of the “Big Game 90″ Then, you are a prosecutor and blindly and blatantly accuse the crew of “rob and steal from you”, none of which I believe is accurate and may well be defamation. You maintain that your fishing partner was charged $2.00 for the fillet bag, which is not true. Then, you incorrectly state that “It’s impossible for that fish to fit in one bag” and that’s not true. Then, “laying a chumline” was incorrectly accomplished by chumming “one fish at a time”, which says you don’t know too much about fishing albacore….I could go on and on but then, you already know everything there is to know about fishing albacore and running a boat operation. Summing it all up in a single word, HA!

Horrible reply to an upset client! He may not know much…or he may! But your reply deservs an “F”. As a business owner, a better reply may be…i’m sorry your experience was not satisfactoroy or how about come back out and lets make it right…or give us another shot and we will do better…A bad day at fishing is going to happen, but he paid to have a pro treat him with respect and enjoy a day of fun!

  2. Ron Stender Says:

Well James, you must be gods screaming genius to
tuna fishing. Funny stuff. I’ve been fishing with
Irv and Mike on BG90 for close to 25 years now
and NEVER heard so much BS in my life. Mike will
go thru hell to find fish, take fliers the Worm,
even the Tanner and back to find tuna. The crew
has always been fair, and like all tuna boats,
most anglers don’t want tuna bellies so they
gladly give them to people who DO want and eat them, as well as the HEADS! You’re way off base and I’d recommend the BG90 to ANYONE who wants to
catch fish and be treated with RESPECT and CLASS!
Sounds like ya’ had a bad trip and took it out on
boat and crew. IDIOT! Try TIME ON THE WATER and
learn how to FISH is my suggestion. You’re way
out of line, and should take up lawn darts.

  3. Steve Says:

I joined the boat twice a month Captain Mike is not only professional but also hard working guy.
Iam familiar to all big boat in LA harbors and San Diego. Big Game 90 is one of the best big game fishing boat. Although one crew I do not like.
The poster is crazy. He is a buster!!!

  4. Steve Says:

In February we are fishing on Big Game 90
Mike dived in cold water more than 30 minutes to clear somthing on the boat propeller. You can imagine as “old man” in winter icy water!!! At that moment , My heart was in touched. He is a such a respected captain I love him!!!!

  5. Gary Wagner Says:

    Mike and Crew,
I wouldn’t even waste my time responding to something that thinks they know everything. I have made several trips with you and have always had a Great Time and caught lots of fish. We tried another boat a couple of years ago and were disappointed so we are back this yeat have a trip Aug 1 thru 4th and looking for a Great Time! Keep up the good work.

    Sincerely,
    Gary Wagner

  6. Keith krupp Says:

    I’M WITH YOU JAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went on the BG90 and guess what?

First, the sun was shining so bright I had to get real squinty ALL DAY!!!!!! Second, I saw my reflection in one of the boat’s windows and it MADE ME LOOK FAT!!!!! Third, Every time I caught a fish one of the deck hands rushed up (I think they wanted to steal it!)… Fourth, every time I put my hand in their bait tank THE WATER WAS COLD!!!!!! Fifth, Several times, some of the other people on the boat WERE LAUGHING (about me, I’ll bet)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could go on and on BUT MY COMPUTER JUST RAN OUT OF EXCLAMATION POINTS…

  7. American Patriot Says:

    James…STFU…

it’s fishing…not buying fish…You want fish go to the market! Save you time and money and on top of that…save room for the rest of us who want to be on this boat. I’ve been on boats and let me tell you, these guys are great…I’ve felt like I was treated with respect when I was asking questions wether or not they were novice or expert sport fisherman. They know their stuff and work hard to make the trips fun. IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE BOAT THEN DON’T GO AGAIN!!! Idiot…so disrespectful.

If you can run a boat James, buy one and go on your own. Seems like you can’t captain the SS MINOW!

    signed,

    Satisfied Customer from LA.

  8. Bill Duffle Says:

I was also on this trip, and flew from Colorado specifcally to go fishing with Mike and cre on the Big Game 90.

I personally think this crew worked their asses off to find fish. As any real fisherman knows you dont always find alot of fish. I did not speak to anyone on this trip that felt that the captain and crew were not trying their hardest to
find fish. In fact, we made multiple stops, ands every stop that had fish was due to a jig strike. So obviouslly trolling speed must have been correct. You falso failed to mention, that
when we did get on fish with multiple hook ups some fish were lost due fisherman error. You were probally one of them.

I was in the wheel house listening to the radio and no other boats were catching more fish than we were. it was a rough 2 days, that’s fishing.

I had two other guys in my party and one of them didnt catch a single fish, however he did not blame it on the captain or crew, he chalked it up to fishing and enjoyed himself just the same. He is a REAL fisherman.

I have booked a second trip in Sept. on Big Game 90 and look forward to another great experience with Mike and his crew. It is good to know you wont be on the rail next to me.

In response to Shanon, I am also a business owner and know that you cant just let someone hammer on your employees and business in this manner without a firm response. I am a firm believer that the customer is not always right.

  9. KD Says:

Reading James post, It is clear HE treated no one with respect. I feel the owners reply was well said and completely respectful. Just because you own a business you should not be required to accept anything and everything from a customer. I commend Irv for his response and support of his employees.

  10. james Says:

    not allowing me to respond

  11. bob blaydes Says:

Mike, you and the crew are tops. Ive been on 2 of your trips and have another planned in Sept. Keep up the good work

  12. bob blaydes Says:

I would like to add, the food was great.

  13. Rob Says:

I have never fished the BG 90 , so I have no clue as to the boat , crew, or fishing conditions that were there on that trip. But, fishing sometimes does not pan out the way people want and getting into a blogger rant back and forth doesnt help anyone. James , suck it up and deal with it. I have been on a few trips where we didnt get anything for days and came back skunked. Mike , Irv, you guys have the chance to be a hero to this guy and take him on another trip and show him some good fishing. Always look on the bright side of things!

    Big Rob

  14. Irv Says:

    Rob
Thanks for the comment. As I said in the begining We do take peoples comments seriously but after speeking with several other fishermen that where on the same trip We feel that it would be best if James fished on another boat. Perhaps one that he ownes. That way he could put his vast amount of experance to use.
As business owners we don’t like to turn anyone away but if one person is going to spoil the trip for the rest of the group we feel if’s best for that person to find another place to fish.

  15. biggabe Says:

Mike who?? ha ha ha,,Mike and the Crew are the best,,Period…nough said….

  16. Phil Says:

CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!! HEHE
You can please most of the people some of the time, But for sure you can’t please all of the people all of the time. People like james can fall in a ditch and find a diamond worth a million dollars and be pissing and moaning about how that ditch(with the diamond in it)should not have been in his way!!! That’s what they do… We call them WHINERS.

  17. John Says:

I was on the trip,my first time on the BG 90 and caught nothing, but other people did! and there was a guy that really didn’t care to let others troll that had not caught any fish {like him} but he decided to be a hog for two trolls in a row and even attempted to make it three, but the deck hand caught it and made him move.he slithered back ltr. {that was probably that James guy.} the effort made by the Captain was nothing short of awesome!.there was 8 in our group, and three got fish! we thought that the Cap’t was good, fair, and went over and beyond when a lot of others wouldn’t have, that’s all I have to say about that. from the heart Mike, you and crew were great!!!

  18. chuck weber Says:

Hey James, I was on this trip also, and sure I was a little dissapointted that we were not going out foe albies and bluefin. I had booked this trip 6 months earlier and that was what I thought we would be going for,as I think everyone did,but i’ve been fishing with mike and the boys for years and they’re out there every day and if mike thinks that we’ll have a better trip going down to cedros I will always respect his decision. Obviously you have not fished very often with mike or you would already know the lengths that he’ll go to put you on fish. Some of my best fishing trips of my life have been on this boat, like 285 yft’s on a guadalupe trip back in 2008 or last year when we had bluefin under the boat for 6 hours. I would like to thank everyone in the bg90 family for all the good times, and hope to continue fishing this boat in the future as long as they’ll keep putting up with me.And the guy with the mowhawk, he once spent a half an hour getting a yft off the bowline for me,so he,s allright by me.

  19. mako madness Says:

    JAMES………..SHUT UP!!! GROW UP!!!!

AS FOR MIKE AND IRV……… ME AND THE REST OF YOUR CLIENTS WILL BE SEEING YOU IN THE FUTURE FOR GREAT FISHING TRIPS AND PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE IN OUR MUCH LOVED SPORT. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT AND YOUR WORKERS FOLLOW IN YOUR STEPS. GOD BLESS AND DON’T LET THIS DRAMA UPSET YOU.

DRAMA: THEY SAY THEY HATE IT, BUT THEY CREATE IT!!

  20. mako madness Says:

JAMES, I SEE A PATTERN IN THE RESONSES TO YOUR POST. I BET U FEEL LIKE AN ASS.

IT’S OK THOUGH, I HEARD THEY ARE CATCHING A BUNCH OF SANDBASS ON THE HALF-DAY BOATS. YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A SHOT :)

  21. Kevro Says:

Even from a business owner standpoint, you can’t knock the sentiment expressed by Larry and Irv (and the rest of the BG90 crew I’m sure). James’ attitude sucked well before he boarded the 90 and it’s still sucking well after. Pay close attention to the nature of some of James’ gripes…they are gripes that were going to exist irrespective of his own fishing performance. Fish hold not cold enough, theft of processed fish, guys camped in the corner.
The writing was on the wall with this guy and Irv’s first response (prior to departure) to him was perfect. James may have some credibility somewhere but he certainly has none here. I’m almost surprised that Irv is publishing his comment here, but then it occurs to me that he has pinned James to a spinning wheel where we can all throw daggers at him. In my line of work we “black list” people so they cannot return to our resort town conveniently, if at all…James screams black list.

  22. jerry bergman Says:

I have never been on a sport boat were the crew did not want you to catch your fish. Absurd. These guys will do everything possible to land your fish.
Is this guy the trolling expert? Absurd.
When the crew says no weight, believe them, they are out there every day. Take there advice. They are the experts, not you.
If you want the belly’s, tell them and they will keep them for you. Some boats throw the belly’s overboard, but ask them to keep them for you.
And why the hell would they want to steal your fish?
The chum line. Standard practice. Again, they are the experts.
I can not comment on the fish storage.
And the bathrooms? Did you mean the heads? Did you want to take a bath? Did you expect a 5 star accomodation? Powder your face? What a whimp.
This guy is not a true fisherman.
I look forward to fishing on this 1st class boat.

  23. Ron Says:

Wow, I guess this guy (James) was pissed at you Mike!! I remember a trip I took last year with Mike and Crew on BG90, 3 days of fun! Mike is one stand-up guy…….. If I thought for one second like James has, I would not keep comming back to BG90……. It’s called Fishing dude! Mike and Crew are SLAYERS, if the fish are around and biting, Mike will find them.
See you guys on the October 3rd trip, CAN’T WAIT!!!

  24. Eric Says:

This guys a moron…sometimes you just dont catch fish, thats why its called fishing and not catching!! Ive fished on the BG90 several times always awesome…we caught 450 YFT in one morning last year. Plus I really appreciate and say “thank you” to them for there discount to Firefighters!!!

  25. daniel ledbetter Says:

What can i say Captain Mike always works the hardest to find the fish, i would trust the crew with my life. Always honest and helpful. TRIED THE REST THE BIG GAME 90 WAS THE BEST!

  26. Tom Loy Says:

I read the post this guy (James) put up even before the trip, that showed his true colors and explained everything. It’s not really worth even responding to this knucklehead.
I would like to add that Irv, Larry, Mike, Brad, Jake, Aaron, and the rest of the guys are TOPS in my book. From the first phone call to Larry to hold the reservation, through the end, picking your fish up in the parking lot at the end of the trip, there is no “business” so accomodating as the BIG GAME 90!!! Hope to get out with you guys soon!

  27. Eric S Says:

I was on trip #36 along with 7 other friends and yes, the fishing was tough, BUT, I don’t think it’s fair to put that on Mike and the crew. Those guys are awesome. The fish were not biting, it happens. Is that going to stop me from fishing…no. Will I go on the Big Game 90 again…YES!!
It is clear that James did not have a good time. Perhaps he should book his next trip on a boat that
    has it’s own foot masseuse.

  28. DOUG FOSTER Says:

Mike, hope this guy is not on our trip for 6 days in Oct. You and your crew do a great job. I cann’t wait to get on the boat.

    Thanks,
    Doug Foster

  29. Ronald Hall Says:

First time on the Big Game, tough fishing but trip was fun. I really feel that we the fishermen were at fault for the count of fish we obtained. The last stop could have been wide open, but we lost nine fish and that stopped the bite. Maybe James was the gentleman with the Spectra that was slicing thru the lines. Mike never did give up as the same for the crew. Please post pictures of the trip, if you can.
    Thanks Ron

  30. Thomas F. Jenkins Jr. Says:

James try fishing on some half day boats then try a few 3/4 day after that over nite after a couple of years then you might be ready to fish on a real boat again Mike is a hunter he is one of the best Captains in San Diego as for trolling speed 8-10 mph is normal and I’ve checked for years with a G P S . His crew is better than most and I’m going out on the Big Game 90 this Sunday if I don’t catch anything it will still be a great trip on the water. c-ya sun Mike & crew

    Tom Jenkins Jr.

  31. Thomas F. Jenkins Jr. Says:

Just got back from our 2.5 day trip yesterday.
What a nice trip, the boat only got 12 fish the first day on paddys. So Mike decided to go to San Martain That was the right move,it started out slow but Mike made a move and a short time later it was on nice grade of yellowtail for most of the day there were fish hanging. Well James I checked andyou were wrong you get 4 pieces of yellowtail out of one fish and it does fit in one ziploc bag and these were 20 through 35 # fish.
Thanks Mike & crew c-ya Sept. 12 for another trip with my spinning gear.
    Tom Jr.
